Plan Ahead! I like to take my time with creating different rough drafts before settling on a final design. Think about small details you can add to your piece to enhance the story you're telling in your art piece. Consider how negative space could make an impact on how the focus of your painting is directed. Try a few different blocking techniques until you master utilizing negative space to your full advantage. I'm still working on this skill myself. The rest of these tips are also for beginners. These are the easy building steps you can use to build on your skills to become a master at your trade.

Create a Roadmap. On a spare piece of paper or even in your sketchbook, try mapping out how you are going to utilize color and shading to enhance your story. Test out different shades of different colors to find the mood of your painting. The more time you put into knowing how you're going to execute your final piece, the more of an impact your story can have.

When you're working with watercolors, always begin with your lightest colors first. I like to use this opportunity to map out my color blocking. I do this so that I can see distinctly where my colors need to go. Invest in good watercolor paper from the get-go. Better quality watercolor paper can stand more abuse than the pages in your sketchbook. You can continue to add layers and dimension to your piece long after you would have had to stop on regular paper. This can be a great way to set your own pace and find your style while still having a fun finished product to share at the end.

Think about the key players of your piece. Bring those things to the foreground of your painting and push everything else to the background. The background colors and tones should set the mood for your overall painting.
You can accomplish this easily by choosing a simple 'Color Story.'
For example, in this painting I only used 4 different colors in varying shades to tell my story. My background is a night sky, so I painted it blue with tones of red to darken it. I painted my focus in lighter tones to provide a stark contrast against the night sky.
Mix more color than you need for your painting. In fact, I like to make enough color to use on another painting in the same color palette to give my paintings a similar look and broaden my imagination when it comes to use of color.

Schedule a time and a place for art. Create a Magic art space for yourself somewhere quiet where you can immerse yourself in your project and really push your imagination to it's limits.
Set your intention for you art session, and keep it. You don't need to finish an entire piece all in one sitting. You can decide to color block your painting in one session. Do background detail in the next session. Begin work on your focus the next day. Or you can finish the whole piece all at once, but give yourself plenty of time to complete your intention.

Have fun with it, stay creative!
